Like many of us who like our tech gadgets, it's nice when you can have a nice gadget that's not only fun and exciting to work with but actually provides a vital function around the house to boot.

The Nest Thermostat sure looks pretty cool and it has a matching price tag to go along with it.  I looked at a few reviews of the Nest and thought that maybe the 2nd or 3rd generation Nest might be worth looking into.  The Nest, for me, has a few negatives...

* I live in a 2 story house and the motion sensor would have limited ability in my case.  I'd like to see it with a 2nd motion sensor that one could position in a different area of the house.​

I forget how I stumbled across the Filtrete 3M-50 but I'm sure glad I did.  I followed the instructions along with watching a couple of youtube videos and installation went without a hitch.  I can't recall exactly but the wi-fi config had a small snag but one of the videos had warmed me about that.  It's been up and running for several months now.

It's nice to be away from home and be able to adjust temps from across town or across the country.  So far I'm very happy with this unit and if you can find it on sale (recently saw it for $69.00) I wouldn't hesitate.  Remember you need wifi in the house and you also need proper power going to the thermostat.  Check your old unit to confirm this.
